How to Cancel or Downgrade iCloud+ Storage Safely

Why you downgrade instead of cancel

There is no single “cancel iCloud” button that wipes the slate clean. What you do is switch your plan down. The honest risk: the moment your storage need exceeds the free 5GB, iCloud Photos, iCloud Drive and your device backup can stop updating, and Apple may eventually remove data that no longer fits.

So before downgrading, reduce what you store. Turn off iCloud Photos or download your library to a computer first. Delete old device backups you no longer need. Move large files out of iCloud Drive. Once you are comfortably under 5GB, or you have a copy elsewhere, the downgrade is safe.

Step by step: downgrade on your iPhone or iPad

1. Open Settings and tap your name at the top.
2. Tap iCloud.
3. Tap Manage Account Storage (on some versions this reads Manage Storage).
4. Tap Change Storage Plan.
5. Tap Downgrade Options and sign in with your Apple Account password if asked.
6. Choose the Free 5GB plan, or a smaller paid tier, then confirm.

The change takes effect at the end of your current billing period, so you keep the storage you already paid for until then. On a Mac you can do the same under System Settings, your name, iCloud, Manage.

How the charge shows on your statement

iCloud+ bills through Apple, not a separate company, so on a card or bank statement it usually appears as something like APPLE.COM/BILL or simply Apple with a small recurring amount. That line can also cover Apple Music, an app subscription or an App Store purchase, which is why a single “Apple” entry is easy to misread.
