How to analyze your comdirect statement and find the leaks

How to analyze your comdirect statement and find the leaks · VESTELON FLOW

comdirect customers are usually deliberate people. You do not end up with a comdirect account by accident — you chose it, probably for the brokerage, probably years ago, and you likely run several products through it. That is precisely the profile where money leaks: multiple products, a long history, and a monthly Finanzreport that you have stopped opening because nothing in it ever seemed urgent.

Everything you need is already in the transaction data. comdirect gives you two years of it in a machine-readable format, which is more than most German banks.

How to export your comdirect transactions

In the personal area, go to Konto & Karte and open Umsätze. Select the transactions you want using the time period and the other filter criteria, then export them as CSV using the option at the bottom of the list.

Two limits worth knowing before you start. From the website you can export the last two years as CSV — generous compared to banks that give you a hundred days, but not unlimited, so if you want a long history, do it now. And there is no automatic export: this only works manually, so a quarterly calendar reminder is the practical answer.

Your actual account statements are somewhere else: they sit in the PostBox, as PDF, in the comdirect app or in online banking. Those go back further than the CSV window, and FLOW reads PDF statements too — so for a long view you can combine the two-year CSV with older PDFs from the PostBox.

Since comdirect became part of Commerzbank, parts of the banking run on Commerzbank infrastructure, so the interface may have shifted since you last looked. The path above is what matters: transactions for the CSV, PostBox for the statements.

Upload the files to VESTELON FLOW. You never share your comdirect login, your PIN, your photoTAN or any access to the bank. FLOW reads the files you exported yourself, nothing else.

Inside the export, expect dates as DD.MM.YYYY, amounts in euro with a comma as the decimal separator, transfers as SEPA credit transfers and recurring charges as SEPA-Lastschrift. If you also run securities through the account, the settlement legs appear as their own rows — worth separating out mentally, because those are not spending.

Where money quietly leaks at comdirect

comdirect's own pricing is generally competitive, so the leaks here are rarely bank fees. What shows up on a long-held multi-product account:

  • SEPA direct debits nobody reviews. Insurance, memberships, software, association dues. A Lastschrift runs until you stop it, and nothing prompts you to look.
  • Card subscriptions under a processor's name. The most common single finding on any account, and the hardest to spot by eye.
  • Conditions you no longer meet. Accounts that were free on conditions — a minimum monthly inflow, a certain activity level — can quietly start charging when your life changes. The statement is where that becomes visible.
  • Small recurring amounts under ten euro. Individually invisible; a dozen of them running for a year is a real number.
  • Currency conversion outside the euro area. Letting the merchant convert into euro generally costs more than letting your bank do it.

No amounts in that list, deliberately. Pricing changes and depends on your product mix. The number that matters is the one on your own export.

What FLOW finds in a comdirect export

Upload the CSV and FLOW does the reading. Every row is categorised, then FLOW looks for what the eye skips in several hundred lines:

  • Every recurring charge, ranked by annual cost rather than monthly.
  • Bank charges separated from your actual spending, so the price of the account is a visible figure.
  • Forgotten subscriptions and direct debits, including those under a processor's name.
  • Your fixed costs against your income, which determines your real room each month.
  • How many months your current reserve would cover if the income stopped.

One report, ranked, with the first three actions worth taking. No bank connection, nothing to install, no open-banking consent.

Turning the report into recovered money

  1. Cancel what you no longer use. Top of the ranked list first; forgotten subscriptions are the fastest win.
  2. Check the conditions on your account. If it was free on conditions, confirm you still meet them, and decide whether meeting them is worth it.
  3. Export every quarter. There is no automatic export and the window is two years, so put it in the calendar once.
  4. Redirect what you recovered. Straight to savings or your reserve, before it leaks elsewhere.

FLOW is in early access, so you are ahead of the crowd, and your first report is free. Upload one export and get one clear answer: what your comdirect account actually costs you.
